About Us

Northern Territory Library (NTL) provides for the information, educational and cultural needs of the people of the Northern Territory through a range of services.

The Northern Territory Library provides leadership in the delivery of library services throughout the Northern Territory and delivers public library services in partnership with Department of Employment, Education and Training, and Community and Local Government.

The Northern Territory Library at Parliament House is the major public reference and research library for the Northern Territory and was formerly known as the State Reference Library. The Library preserves and provides access to Northern Territory documentary and cultural heritage, and provides services for the Northern Territory community to access recorded global knowledge. The Library provides Library services to the Parliament, via the Parliamentary Library Service.

The Northern Territory Library is developing Libraries and Knowledge Centres with access to knowledge and information through core library services, including English literacy, information literacy programs and recreational activities. The centres enable the acquisition and preservation of local knowledge in communities and provide training and support to community members engaged in acquiring and preserving knowledge.

Library services provided to libraries across the Northern Territory include the ordering, buying, cataloguing and end processing of library materials selected by library staff in public libraries throughout the Territory. A collection of large print, spoken word and foreign language material is circulated amongst public and community libraries. Serials acquisitions are also managed for most libraries in the Territory.

The Virtua Integrated Library Management System is managed for over 50 libraries, that are part of LINNet (Libraries in the Northern Territory Network). LINNet members include Public and Community libraries, Secondary School and College libraries, various Government libraries and the Northern Territory Library. The Virtua system controls customer and vendor accounts, stock rotation and also delivers the Online Public Access Catalogue. Cataloguing expertise ensures the integrity of the catalogue is maintained. The Virtua database is an extremely valuable resource, providing our clients with access to over a million items, located in the Northern Territory. It also supports the delivery of online resources which can be used within a library or remotely by becoming a member of a library.
