Free weekly newspaper for ‘all services in the NT’ published in Darwin prior to and after the bombing (19 February 1942 when other civilian publication of newspapers ceased). First issue has a warning regarding censorship rules during the war asking people not to leak information that might be important to the ‘enemy’. Contains both local Darwin news and national and international news throughout the period although local news is less after the first bombing raid.

The New Darwin
Community based newspaper, founded by Peter and Kass Hancock and produced for a short time following Cyclone Tracy with the aim of being by and for “the community at the ordinary level of advising, helping, chatting, getting angry, laughing, and occasionally crying.” First lead article is a call to the community to reject plans they object to and later issues strongly opposed medium-density housing.

Indexes (held in book form in the Northern Territory Collection) were prepared by South Australian Laurie Debnam to people mentioned in the paper (1883 -1890) with an indication as to whether it was news (N), a classified advertisement (A), sport event (S), letter to editor (L) or a court case (C).
Boats mentioned in the paper are also indexed in the first two pages of the Debnam boat index with items divided into news, sport and ads
+Northern Standard
Weekly newspaper published by North Australian Worker’s Union in Darwin, usually presenting news from the unions’ point of view but also covering general and social news. Co-existed with the Northern Territory Times and Gazette until June 1932 when the Times ceased and the Northern Standard became the only Darwin paper until the war when the Army News took over the function for the war period. The Standard began publication again in July 1946, finally ceasing publication in 1955.

Daily newspaper printed in Darwin but now distributed Territory wide by News Ltd. First issue, published by local residents including John Coleman, was printed on 8 February 1952 and features young Queen Elizabeth, who was visiting Australia, having to fly home when her father died. The first issue pledged to “fight for North Australia” and claimed to stand for “truth, decency and a fair go.” Rupert Murdoch’s News Ltd organisation took over control of the paper in the 1960s.

Weekly newspaper (occasional missing issues) from November 1873 covering local news, shipping, courts, national and international news and many advertisements. Also incorporated the government gazette; amalgamated with the North Australian in 1890

There is also a people index to the Gazette section of the paper.
Boats mentioned in the paper are also indexed in the Debnam boat index with items divided into news, sport and ads
There are also indexes listing passengers and ships mentioned in the paper between 1873 and 1914.
The Debnam people index was continued by the Joy Davis index for the Northern Territory Times from 1915 to 1920 and indicates the page number and brief idea of whether it is news, death, sport, ad etc. Some events are also listed in this index.
The NT Genealogical Society (located in Cavenagh Street in the NT Archives Building) holds a subject index to the Northern Territory Times from 1873 to 1875, prepared by former NT librarian Herbert Crompton.

Sunday Territorian
This was a Sunday Darwin based newspaper produced by the Peter Isaacson group which won a court case to be able to use the name Sunday Territorian after the News Ltd group registered and then started a newspaper by the same name. Patrick Cusick, the editor, claimed in the first issue that the court case win ensured “freedom of choice” for Territorians and claimed not to favour any group or political party. Regular features on people, tropical lifestyle and background news items. When it ceased publication, many of its features were continued in the Midweek Territorian, another Isaacson paper.

Sunday Territorian
This was a Sunday newspaper produced by the News Ltd group in competition with the Peter Isaacson group which produced a paper with the same name (see above). The News Ltd paper, which began as a ‘free’ paper, claimed in its first issue to be the single biggest print run ever seen in the Territory up to that time (56 pages and 31,000 copies). The News Ltd paper continued after the Peter Isaacson paper ceased publication in 1985 and is still being published.

Territorian
This was a magazine type newspaper produced for several years, first advertised as a quarterly but there is a gap from 30 April 1863 to June 1965. It is then somewhat irregular until August 1967 when it is published bi-monthly. The first issue said it was ‘an outback quarterly covering North Australia,’ with Keith Willey as editor and with correspondents for the Kimberley, Queensland and Alice Springs. It first advertised itself as the official organ of the North Australian Cattlemen’s Association and Northern Territory Game Shooters’ Association. The publication contains many feature articles on people, places and events of the Northern Territory with many well known writers, including early Australian film producer Cecil Holmes, contributing to the paper over the years.
