The Thea Schmitz Collection is a collection of rare and valuable books, which honours the memory of Dr. Maria Theresa (Thea) Schmitz. Dr. Schmitz was the first Principal Librarian appointed to the Northern Territory Library Service in 1971.
The collection comprises works mainly selected by Dr. Schmitz during the 1970s and 1980s. The books range from early imprints such as William Bligh’s A Voyage to the South Seas which was printed in 1792 to facsimile editions of the Domesday Book and the Gutenberg Bible. Many of the volumes in the collection are works of art in themselves.
The collection was named after Mr Louis Marks (b.1922 -d.1994), a former chairman of the Australian National Railway Commission and founding chairman of Railnorth Pty Ltd who campaigned tirelessly for the Alice Springs to Darwin railway.
The items were collected by the Northern Territory Government over many years, and the historical component of the collection was transferred to the Northern Territory Library in 2000.
The Lou Marks Collection primarily comprises reports of various origins, many of a technical nature.
