About legal deposit legislation
The Publications (Legal Deposit) Act 2004 will commence on 1 March 2005 and will provide for the long-term preservation of, and access to, the Northern Territory’s documentary heritage.
The purpose of regulating legal deposit is to encourage compliance. This is a cooperative and consensual approach to ensuring a complete record of the Northern Territory’s documentary heritage.
Under the new legislation Territorians will find it easier to research all aspects of Territory life and culture through a more comprehensive record of the Northern Territory’s social and cultural history.
All other Australian jurisdictions have similar statutory requirements that require publications to be deposited with the appropriate state library. The Publications (Legal Deposit) Act 2004, will ensure best practice standards are met by the Northern Territory.
What does the legislation cover?
Only published documents or those available to the public on request need to be deposited with the Northern Territory Library (NTL). The legislation covers publications in any form published in the Northern Territory including:
Related policy & legislation
Items deposited under the Act will be subject to the Northern Territory Library Collection Development Policy, for eventual lodgement in the Northern Territory Collection.
The new legislation will complement the Information Act 2002 which provides access to government documents published in the Northern Territory.
How will the legislation affect me?
If you publish a document, you will need to provide a copy to the Northern Territory Library. In the case of Internet publications, you will need to provide a web address.
The document or web address needs to be provided within two months of publication unless other arrangements have been made.
What publications are exempt?
The legislation specifically exempts culturally sensitive information and certain dynamically generated spatial information. A publisher may choose to deposit any culturally sensitive information for preservation and safekeeping. The Northern Territory Library will ensure that any restrictions to access to specific publications are observed.

Material will be stored with the Northern Territory Library.

About PictureNT
The Northern Territory Library’s image collection contains over 120,000 historical and contemporary photographs.
The collection covers a broad range of subjects relating to the Territory and its people, illustrating life in the Northern Territory from the 1870s to the present day. Of particular note are collections of images relating to the early days of Darwin, Indigenous Australians of the Northern Territory, early Aboriginal contact with Europeans, Northern Territory Chinese Community, World War Two, the pastoral industry, mining, railways and the Northern Territory in the 1950s and 1960s.
PictureNT traces its origins to the early 1980’s in the aftermath of Cyclone Tracy, when the newly formed State Reference Library of the Northern Territory began collecting photographs of the Territory.
PictureNT has grown to its present day size through both donation and purchase, owing its considerable coverage of the early years of the Northern Territory to the generosity of private donors throughout Australia.
Indigenous Australians are advised that PictureNT may include images and names of people who have passed away.
How can I access the collection?
Many of the images are available online via the PictureNT website.
The entire PictureNT collection is searchable within the Northern Territory Library (at Parliament House).
Can I purchase reproductions?
Images can be purchased – available as email attachments, CD Rom or digital prints. Download the order form, complete and return to Northern Territory Library.
Can I print or publish the images?
The images have been made available for research and study as permitted under the fair dealing provisions of the Copyright Act 1968. Permission to publish must be obtained from the Northern Territory Library should you wish to use the images in public. To obtain a Permission to Publish form contact the Northern Territory Library.
