Excerpt: Public debate in the Indigenous domain often highlights literacy as the key to Indigenous futures and solutions to the education ‘problem’ commonly include school-based remedial reading programs and phonics-based instruction. In this talk Inge Kral situates literacy in the remote Indigenous world from an ethnographic and historical perspective rather than a pedagogical or instructional one and discusses the implications for early years literacy and the role that libraries can play in the promotion of everyday literacy practices in Indigenous communities.
