2009 Chief Minister's Northern Territory History Book Awards

Winners were announced at a ceremony at Parliament House on Friday 9 October.  

The Chief Ministers NT History Book Award is presented annually to the author of a published book which relates to Northern Territory history.

Seven entries were received this year, and were of an exceptionally high standard.

The Northern Territory Library are the custodians of the documentary history of the Northern Territory, and aim to promote excellence in scholarship and research.

It was a unanimous decision by the judges that both shortlisted books were deserving of the award, and they will each receive $1000 in prize money.

The joint winners of the 2009 Chief Minister’s Northern Territory History Book Awards are:

 Yalangbara: art of the Djang’kawu by Banduk Marika
Yalangbara: art of the Djang’kawu' by Banduk Marika and the Rirratjingu clan, and edited by Margie West, published by CDU Press and the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory.

This is the first Indigenous art publication to focus upon one significant ancestral site Yalangbara (Port Bradshaw)





and

Lives of the Papunya Tula Artists by Vivien Johnson'Lives of the Papunya Tula Artists' by Vivien Johnson
This book celebrates 50,000 years of culture, covering half a million square kilometres of country, across five deserts.


 

 


Award Shortlist 2009

The Northern Territory Library and Chief Minister of the Northern Territory would like to thank all authors who entered this 2009 Chief Minister's NT History Book Award. 2009 marks the 6th year of the award and it is encouraging to see authors continuing to produce documented history on the Northern Territory of Australia. In 2009 the Library received seven published books that met the 2009 conditions of entry.

2009 Shortlist:

Vivien Johnson, author of 'Lives of the Papunya Tula Artists'.
