The Awards ceremony for 2010 will be the opening event of the Northern Territory Writers’ Festival, WORDSTORM on 13 May.

2010 also sees the inclusion of two new categories for scripts.

Darwin Festival Script Award awarded for a play or other performance script, vividly imagined and competently crafted, which lends itself naturally to a performance medium.

Also, the Birch Carroll and Coyle Screenwriting Award awarded for a screenplay for a feature or short film or television program, executed with technical excellence and creativity. The script will be judged on the quality of the writing and its feasibility for production and plausible future success.

The NT Literary Awards were established in 1984 and since then have recognised the significant contributions writers make to the Northern Territory’s literature culture, while offering Territory writers an industry-recognised award.

The Northern Territory Library has been proud custodian of the Awards since 2002.

The awards acknowledge written works of outstanding literary merit and reward the achievements of Northern Territory writers.

The winners in each of the six categories were announced on Friday 9th October at a ceremony at Parliament House.

The Territory’s best poems, short stories and essays have been judged from the 22 finalists selected from more than 200 entries received across Central Australia, Tennant Creek, Katherine and Darwin.

A panel of 15 judges including interstate publishers, international authors, local journalists and academics had the task of determining the most outstanding work of literary merit for each category.
